Do you think that the Bible condemns gambling?

Question by : Do you think that the Bible condemns gambling?
Gambling has been described as wagering money on an uncertain outcome. Many people reason that as long as the money belongs to the gambler and he does not become addicted, there is nothing wrong with gambling. In fact, the New Catholic Encyclopedia says that gambling “is not considered sinful except when the indulgence in it is inconsistent with duty.” However, no Scriptural passages are cited to support that conclusion. How, then, should a Christian view this matter? Does the Bible condone or condemn gambling?

  3. I recall the disciples making decisions by casting lots, which is gambling. So guess not.

  4. The Bible never condemns the men who gambled for Jesus’s robe. I was raised Catholic, gambling was treated like alcohol… it’s not a sin.

I have a family member who is……. well …… he’s a drunk ! He’s a real nice guy but he can’t get off the sauce… he asked a priest for absolution. The priest told him, “You have an illness my child, you don’t need absolution but I will pray for you every day.” I have to admit I love that priest for saying that. Gambling is the same… if you can’t stop it’s an illness.

  5. In Matthew 16:19, the Bible states that it is up to the Church. Since you quoted what the Church says, you quote what the Bible says.

  6. The Bible calls it usury which covers gambling and loans. It is against the Bible to borrow money.

  8. It condemns greed and that is what gambling is, greed.

(1 Corinthians 5:9-11) 9 In my letter I wrote YOU to quit mixing in company with fornicators, 10 not [meaning] entirely with the fornicators of this world or the greedy persons and extortioners or idolaters. Otherwise, YOU would actually have to get out of the world. 11 But now I am writing YOU to quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man. . .

  9. Nothing in the bible against gambling. It’s fine to do for fun as long as you fulfill your other responsibilities
